Shigeto is the stage name of Zachary Saginaw, an electronica producer hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States who debuted in 2008. He has released three studio albums along with three EP's and become one of the leading lights of the Michigan EDM scene.
Inspired by the Motown and jazz records that his dad raised him on, Zachary Saginaw's first steps into the world of creating music came when he took up the drums at a very early age. Music had a hold on Saginaw that nearly came at the expense of everything else in his life, if it wasn't for his music grades, for example, he would have flunked out of high school quite spectacularly. However, once he hit college and he could devote all of his studies to music, he flourished, studying jazz drumming all over the world. However, as his studies came to an end he became obsessed with beat making, and once he finished up three years of studying in London, he moved to Brooklyn, New York to begin a career in it.
He took his middle name Shigeto as his stage name, and needless to say his years spent honing his skills as a drummer meant that his production work was extremely beat-orientated and soon after he started, his work became unmistakeably his own. He debuted in 2008 with the “New Crossings EP”, which was released on Moodgagdet Records, and as his portfolio built up he eventually signed with Ghostly International for the release of his debut full-length album “Full Circle”. His atmospheric brand of jazz-inflected instrumental hip-hop has made him one of the most exciting new producers around, and for that, he comes highly recommended.
