Biography

  • Formed in 1973, are KC and the Sunshine Band, a disco funk act whose hits include “That’s the Way (I Like It)”. The band’s name is derived from their home state, Florida.

KC and the Sunshine Band released the singles “Blow You Whistle” in 1973 and “Sound Your Funky Horn” which would go to 27 and 21 in the singles chart, earning the band enough recognition to warrant recording a second album. The eponymous album came in the form of a chart topping success, only to be later certified 3x Platinum in the US alone. It reached number 4 in the US charts and the top 10 of Australia, Canada and the Netherlands. The album featured the hit singles “That’s the Way (I Like It)”, “Get Down Tonight” and “Boogie Shoes”, the former two reaching number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100.

The band’s fourth studio album “Part 3”, released in October 1976, achieved similar success to their eponymous album, managing 3x Platinum certification, and featuring three hit singles, including “Shake Your Booty”, “I’m Your Boogie Man” and “Keep It Comin’ Love”. The first two made it to number one in the Hot 100 Chart whilst the latter made it to number 2. By popular demand, it was reissued in 2006.

The band’s two following albums, “Who Do Ya (Love)”, and “Do You Wanna Go Party?” were both certified Platinum in the US, both of which charting in the Billboard 200. “Do You Wanna Go Party?” showcased the song “Please Don’t Go” which was the band’s final number one hit.

The band would continue to release albums throughout the 1980s, such as “All in a Night’s Work” which made it to number 38 in Australia, and “KC Ten” which peaked at number 93 in the Billboard 200. A ‘Best Of’ compilation album was released in 1990, and was later certified Gold.
