Biography

  • Coldplay (formed in 1996) is pioneering British pop-rock band, formed by lead vocalist Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland, from London, UK.

Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland met during their orientation week for their studies at University College London in 1996. The pair formed the band Pectoralz with the addition of Guy Berryman on bass and Will Champion on drums before renaming themselves Starfish and ultimately Coldplay.

The band broke through into the public consciousness with their hugely popular single “Yellow” in the year 2000. The single broke into the UK Top 5 and paved the way for Coldplay’s debut album “Parachutes” later in July, released through Parlophone Records. The album slingshotted the band to commercial success and critical acclaim; achieving multi-platinum status and a number of highly revered awards came their way including two Brit awards for Best British Group and Best British Album as well as a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 2002.

Coldplay followed the album up with “A Rush of Blood to the Head” in 2002 which spawned several hit singles including “In My Place”, “Clocks” and “The Scientist”. The band supported the album with an increasingly extensive and elaborate-designed live show and touring schedule across five continents including shows at Glastonbury Festival, Sydney, Australia’a Hordern Pavilion and the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.

The band subsequently released the album “X&Y” in 2004 which became the best-selling album of 2005 with the hit singles “Speed of Sound”, “Fix You” and “Talk”. Its successor “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” was produced by the infamous Brian Eno and became one one of the fasting selling albums in UK album history, featuring the singles “Violet Hill” and “Viva la Vida”.

Ahead of Coldplay’s fifth studio album, the band released the lead single “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” and played a number of headlining festival slots including Glastonbury, T in the Park, Austin City Limits Music Festival and Lollapalooza. “Mylo Xyloto” arrived in October 2011 toppping the charts in over 34 countries and much like its predecessors generated a handful of awards.

In early 2014 Coldplay released the singles “Midnight” and “Magic” ahead of the their album “Ghost Stories” eventually released May 19, 2014. The album received mixed to positive reviews and again topped the album charts in the UK and U.S. among other major music markets. Over an highly illustrious and esteemed career Coldplay has garnered eight Brit Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards and seven Grammy Awards from 25 nominations. The band has sold over 80 million records worldwide due to their changing and adaptable approach with each new album, allowing Coldplay to stay novel and interesting and appeal to hoards of new listeners.
